Party Treasure Island in Style!
The Tocobaga, indigenous people who lived around Tampa Bay during the first Spanish colonial period (1513-1763), were the first to colonize the patch of land now called Treasure Island.
Treasure Island is part of the same barrier inlet as Madeira and St. Petersburg Beaches—south of Madeira Beach and North of St. Petersburg Beach. The city has a total area of 5.3 square miles. About 1.6 square miles of it is land and 3.7 square miles of it is water. There were a little over 4,000 households and 7,450 people residing on the island in the year 2000.
By 1915, a few property owners attempted to boost property value and sales in the area by hatching a plan to stage a discovery of chests filled with gold. False as the rumor may have been, the news spread quickly and the name “Treasure Island” stuck.
In the 1950s following World War II, real estate sales and growth exploded. Many real estate ventures used fill from dredged material, augmenting property to be developed.
Baseball’s Babe Ruth owned a beachfront home on Treasure Island after his retirement.
Today, Treasure Island has a thriving bar and restaurant scene in its downtown.
